Guarana (Paullinia cupana), also known as uarana, is the fruit of the guarana tree, a vine native to the Amazon Forests. It is found in Brazil, Peru, Colombia and Venezuela. The plant adapts well to hot and humid climates.
It is a relatively small fruit, with red skin and white pulp, which resembles an eye. Despite its size, the fruit has a high caffeine content (2 to 5%) - a central nervous system stimulant - in addition to containing theobromine and theophylline. Guarana seeds also have minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and iron.
Due to the high caffeine content present in guarana seeds, they stimulate and increase resistance to physical and mental fatigue, as well as helping improve the ability to focus.
Furthermore, caffeine acts in numerous reactions with hormones, such as stimulating the release of adrenaline. It also stimulates the production of the neurotransmitter dopamine.
